Ride of Silence May 19

On Wed, May 19, 2010 at 6:30pm at SC-TAC (formerly Donaldson Center) in Grenville, the Greenville Spinners Bicycle Club will host a “Ride of Silence” to honor those that have been injured or killed on a bicycle.  This is a world-wide initiative that is intended to raise awareness and rally support for cycling.  There is an alternative ride being hosted at the Bellview Baptist Church near Spartanburg at the same time in case you cannot make the ride in Greenville.  These rides will coordinate with other rides that will occur at the same time across the country.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride.  There are no sponsors and no registration fees.  The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways.  The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured on their bicycles.  I hope you will join a Ride of Silence in your area.  There are more details available on the Ride of Silence organization on their website.

After the ride in Greenville, you can head downtown and join in on the Bikeville fun.  There is free bike valet at the Moonlight Movie Series at the Peace Center Amphitheatre.  They will be showing Breaking Away on May 19 @ 8pm.
